Thoughts for Thursday

Father's Day

Don't forget, this Sunday (June 16th) is Father's Day! Somehow, Father's Day always seems a little trickier to plan than Mother's day. If you seem to share this problem, here are a few ideas to help this weekend be a successful one!

Weekend Getaways in California

Summer has finally arrived! As you start pulling out beach towels, bikinis, sunscreen, and vacation destination handbooks, don't forget about all the fun and affordable weekend getaways on your doorstep! California has hundreds of beautiful State and National Parks just waiting to be explored. Many of which offer camping in some of the most areas in the country.
For instance, my friend and I recently took a roadtrip from Southern California up the Coastal Road (Hwy 1). We decided to stop for the night in Santa Barbara. With dusk fast approaching, we quickly selected a campsite at Jalama Beach. It was a bit off the beaten path, but that was part of the appeal. The campground was beautiful, with stunning scenery. There were many sites to choose from. Some of which literally touched the sand. A total escape for anyone looking to get out of town for the weekend.

Healthy Habits.

Whether you're dieting or just looking to add a healthy component to your diet, Chia Seeds are an excellent source of all kinds of healthy goodness! Here's a list of several reasons to add Chia to your daily diet.

  1. Help weight loss. Chia seeds are popular for weight loss. They reduce food cravings by preventing some of the food that you eat from getting absorbed into your system. This blockage of calorie absorption makes them a great diet helper.
  2. Feel fuller faster: They can also help your diet by making you feel full. This is because they absorb 10 times their weight in water, forming a bulky gel.
  3. Hydration for athletes: They are also great for athletes because the "chia gel" can hydrate the body.
  4. Reduce your blood pressure: There's evidence to suggest they can reduce blood pressure.
  5. Omega-3: They are the richest plant source of Omega-3 (the vital fats that protect against inflammation—such as arthritis—and heart disease). In fact, they contain more Omega-3 than salmon!
  6. Benefits for diabetes: Because chia seeds slow down how fast our bodies convert carbohydrates into simple sugars, studies indicate they can control blood sugar. This leads scientists to believe chia seeds may have great benefits for diabetics.
  7. They are easier to digest than flax seeds, and don't need to be ground  up.                                                                                                                                                                                           Chia Seeds can be found at most health food stores, and range in price. They can be added to almost any liquid. I usually mix them with juice, but they can be added to smoothies, water, even yougurt! They do have a strange texture to them (somewhat like tapioca pudding), but don't have much taste. Start improving your diet, and find some today!
